Planning Technicians perform a wide variety of basic research, data collection, and data entry
activities related to planning and permit processing. They provide public information at the
counter, over the phone, and through website and email portals, and are responsible for:

- Reviewing forms and permit applications for completeness and accuracy, and issuing certificates and less complex permits
- Administering certification programs, including online exams; issuing and updating certificates; and tracking and invoicing monitoring fees
- Compiling data and drafting compliance reports, including annual reporting
- Managing databases, web postings, and online reporting tools
The ideal candidates will have:
- Proven customer service skills, with the aptitude and patience for assisting the public
- Excellent judgment, and a common sense approach to resolving issues
- A strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to learn quickly and prioritize tasks effectively
- The ability to interpret government codes and ordinances
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Database and website management experience; experience with permitting software is highly desirable

EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT
Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

Education: Any combination of education and training which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, academic course work in land use planning, economics, geography, landscape architecture or architecture, environmental studies, and/or closed related courses, would provide this opportunity.
